Interviews: Cities will ban cars – Cake in-sourcing production and Vässla goes international

Stefan Ytterborn, Founder and CEO of Cake

At Sweden Sustaintech Venture Day, we met up with these two major players in city mobility, both entrepreneurs on an international scale-up journey. They both shared interesting outlooks on what they do. Listen to Stefan Ytterborn of Cake who is presently in-sourcing manufacturing, and Rickard Bröms of Vässla who is planning an international scale-up with their new subscription model.

They both agree, cities will ban cars, and the transformation will happen...

”We are now scaling up from start-up to vehicle industry. We are in the perfect storm." says Stefan Ytterborn, CEO and Founder of Cake.

”I have kind of neglected the challenge with the general need for electricity. The transition is happening, and technology is developing at high pace. Still my assumption is that we are going need nuclear power to bridge the need for electricity going forward. That is one of my biggest moral discussion I have within myself" says Stefan Ytterborn.

”I have always, in my previous journeys, outsourced manufacturing. We are bringing it all in. Now it has geopolitical reasons, but the main reason is sustainability to make sure we do not ship air all over the world. It is also a matter of efficiency and consistency. Now we have a factory for Europe in Sweden and we are doing the same things in Detroit in America. We are definetly bringing much more in-house." says Stefan Ytterborn.

Rickard Bröms Founder and CEO of Vässla

"We will not allow cars in cities. Paris will block cars from the city center in 2024 and Brussels will do it in August. Stockholm has introduced 13 places this summer where they will ban cars. The reason is that it is a very inefficient way to move around in cities because you have this humongous piece of steel, often transporting one single person. A very easy solution. Use a small vehicle for these short trips. It is not a speculation. It will happen." says Rikard Bröms, CEO and Founder of Vessla, now preparing for intenational scale-up.
